SITREP #048: Military Bronies in the News

I can't make this up.

So this just waltzed into our inbox. And we all remember the whole unapproved patches issue from last year. Except this is an APPROVED patch.  This is the real, totally legit, certified by PAO, unit patch of the Joint Undergraduate Specialized Pilot Class 14-05, as reported by Robert Beckhusen at Medium.com.

Additionally, there are two more articles about the Fort Carlson bronies!

Check them out after the break!

It's kinda funny, we have THIS ARTICLE back from about a year ago and quite a few others which said similar things. So, I thought it a little weird when one of the articles I'm featuring in this post said, "...the show — which airs weekday afternoons on the Hub Network — became a cult phenomenon that’s now spread to the armed forces." 'Now' spread? I wasn't aware we were so recent!

IT'S FUNNY BECAUSE WE ADDED AN "E"

Poor word choice (or harmless ignorance) aside, I was somewhat surprised at the unbiased and even positive portrayal of military bronies in these articles. The first piece was written a couple weeks back and published by The Gazette about the Fort Carson bronies. We even made a post about it on our Facebook! The article can be found HERE.

the lighting on this shot. Good job Mark!

Spc. Jesus Nieves and his ponies...
Now I can offically say: JESUS LOVES PONIES

And here is where you can get the final article!
https://medium.com/war-is-boring/1ce5ba1c074b

 Here's the most interesting part:

"Many of the patches submitted include pop culture references: The Hangover, Facebook and the “Got Milk” ad campaign have all been adopted in the past. Because of this, the Air Force has to seek approval from the copyright holders. Sometimes the holders approve it. Sometimes they don’t. My Little Pony and the Hub Network’s parent company, Hasbro, approved. The other patch designs submitted by the 14-05 didn’t get cleared.

Hence, Air Force bronies."

NOW WAIT A SECOND. READ THAT AGAIN:

"...the Air Force has to seek approval from the copyright holders... Hasbro, approved."
"...Hasbro, approved."
"...HASBRO, APPROVED."

Good to go Hasbro, good to freakin' go!

And then there is this part:
"The patch wasn’t embraced by everyone in the unit. 'There was at least one non-brony who straight up refused to wear it and I overheard another complaining to his mom about it,” said a commenter who claimed to be one airman’s stepmother. “But the flight instructor (who was a captain) was wearing it and he had no problems with his masculinity.' "

I. Freaking. Died.

All I can think of is this:

"BUT MOM! The Bronies are mean! And brightly colored! I don't wanna!"
"Kid, listen. You're gonna be flying fighter jets. It's time you suck it the f**k up."

Finally, there is this:

"But according to Barger, the students of the 14-05 don’t see themselves as bronies at all. 'The class never really wanted it in the first place,' he says. 'They thought it was so off the wall that it was hilarious.'"

Sorry dawg, it's too late to back out now:

-SEMPER FILLY 14-05!
