RoTLcon 2013 Review

Held in Thorton, CO (actually Denver, but we here in Colorado feel the need to sub-name sections of the city), the Running of the Leaves Convention provided a chance for all the locals to meet up and spend some quality time with what unites us all: love for small, colorful equines!  Catch the details of the event after the break.

I was working security safety during the convention, and got to see a number of interesting things.  The first to mention would be the size  Having only been to one other convention before (and that was Bronycon 2013), it's hard to get a good gauge on how many people would come to this sort of event.  At most, there might have been three hundred people within the convention at any given time.  At least it was spacious.

There was an actual running of the leaves, which surprised almost everyone.  There were murmured whisperings of 'Wait we actually have to run?' and 'I'm gonna make sure to pace myself like Twilight!'  Outside the hotel at a nearby park, convention goers could participate in an (almost) 5k, and it was more than a little goofy to see a combination of hardcore runners and determined cosplayers try to run it.  Protip: You can run faster in shorts and tennis shoes than in a Rainbow Dash cosplay outfit.

Notable figures in attendance included Eurobeat Brony/Odyssey, who unveiled a new song live, and the single noisiest guy in the fandom: Yaplap.  The latter actually joined in the karaoke night to sing his particular style to a couple of songs.  I personally saw his live version of 'Babs Seed', and I'm pretty sure that was the reason my sides hurt the next morning.

Once I got past the size of the convention (they actually did turn a profit on it), what struck me the most was the convention goers themselves.  Unlike at Bronycon, where hardcore bronies paid a lot to travel to meet their like kind, at ROTLcon, people would bring their entire families.  There are few things funnier watching an obvious non-brony being led through a mass of cosplayers, artists, and general pony enthusiasts that are all very eager to share.  Better yet, was when they realized that bronies are not harmful.

It has been confirmed that there will be a ROTLcon 2014 (though the exactly location is yet to be determined).  Keep an eye out for a future post on that, and if you live in the greater front-range area, consider spending some time with your fellow Colorado bronies in the October of next year.  This is 'red Sage, Semper Filly everypony, and goodnight!
